Maison Margiela and Reebok launch the TZ Pump Deadstock: the newest trainer conceived as part of the creative dialogue between the two brands. Released in stores on November 18th, 2022, the shoe pays homage to a pop cultural sneaker icon by imbuing the original Reebok design with the traces of time and deconstruction distinct to the philosophy of Maison Margiela by imitating the transformative process known as hydrolysis.
For the next chapter of Maison Margiela’s collaboration with Reebok, Creative Director John Galliano investigates the TZ Pump originally launched in 1990 and made famous by the basketballer Dominique Wilkins as a pillar in the evolution of sneakers. Celebrating its history by honouring the passage of time, the original design is interpreted through the natural deconstruction process of hydrolysis: the water-induced chemical breakdown of a sneaker’s construction, which inevitably sets in with time. The technique was first employed by Maison Margiela in the DDSTCK trainer in 2020.
Based on a three-dimensional scan of the original TZ Pump kept in Reebok’s archives in Boston – now touched by traces of hydrolysis – the new TZ Pump Deadstock features an aged upper created through staining and distress, with a cracked and hand-painted midsole. It will be available in the shoe’s original tri-colourways: white, black and neon yellow; white, black and red; and white, black and blue.
Maison Margiela x Reebok TZ Pump Deadstock will be available from November 18th in select Maison Margiela stores and on maisonmargiela.com with a retail price of €890 - £890 - $1150 - ¥135.000 - HKD 9.690 - ₩1.500.000 - RMB 8.380.
