CYBER! THE NEW DROP FROM JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

CYBER! THE NEW DROP FROM JEAN PAUL GAULTIER illustration 1

New products / Fashion house - 11/4/22

Inspired by the 90s “Les Amazones” and “Cyberbaba” runway shows, maison Jean Paul Gaultier rehashes classic archive pieces in a new ready-to-wear drop. Shot by TORSO, the campaign features eleven faces and figures, all revealed during the Maison’s first open casting call. Welcome to Cyber !

THE SIXTH ELEMENT
Picture it: we have been zapped back to the mid-90s. Amidst preparing the cult costumes for the 1997 film, The Fifth Element, the Maison produces two of its most iconic runways: “Les Amazones” for autumn-winter 1995-1996 and “Cyberbaba” for spring-summer 1996. Now, flash forward to 2022 and Cyber, the latest ready-to-wear capsule collection that fuses these two runways of the past to birth pieces anchored in the present.

LEGENDARY VASARELY
Back then, “Les Amazones” was peppered with the dot print inspired by the pop art of Hungarian artist, Victor Vasarely. Today, some three decades on, Cyber reworks this motif in fresh neon palettes, bringing it to a medley of skin-tight garments and stretch jersey fabric. Forming the veritable backbone of the drop, the print is spangled over both a full bodysuit (complete with gloves and hood) and a micro-bikini. Contorted and morphed, these polka dots in colour gradients warp the body through optical illusions.

CYBER-TAILORED
Plucked from the Jean Paul Gaultier world of the 90s, military style reigns anew in this drop with army trench coats, laminated inner linings turned inside-out and neatly structured crimping. This battle-ready silhouette continues with a soft woollen bomber jacket, suit jacket and trousers in speckled anthracite grey, which blend with a loose oversized parka and cargo pants in a blurred khaki print.

LASER-PRECISE
As for knitted and jersey pieces, Cyber transmogrifies the hallmark “holes” of the “Cyberbaba” runway into laser cuts with minute, surgical precision. Taken to the extreme, these perforations take up even more space than the actual fabric, transforming it into lacy fishnet on the collection’s skirts and bodysuit. Meanwhile, instead of being shot full of holes, rib-knit pieces are folded and unfolded like an accordion. Referencing the circuit boards that acted as invitations to the 1995 show, the Jean Paul Gaultier Studio melds bottle-
green wool with a bright orange lurex over a long dress, a top and a giant scarf. In a similar vein, the Maison’s emblematic marinière motif is now found on a striking, laminated rib knit.

JEWELLERY BY LA MANSO
All sporting the Cyber colours, the drop’s jewellery pieces are the fruit of Jean Paul Gaultier’s first collaboration with Adriana Manso, founder of Spanish label, La Manso. Just for the Maison, she has also reworked one of her iconic creations: a stackable, bulging “dot” ring. Forming a hodgepodge of shapes and styles, the jewellery pieces clash colours and create contrasts. Each one 3D-printed at her Barcelona studio, Adriana Manso’s rings, bracelets and knuckle-dusters lock in the Cyber allure.

AN OPEN-CAST CAMPAIGN
On 17th September 2022, Jean Paul Gaultier HQ hosted an open casting call. Out of the total 837 participants of all ages and genders in attendance, eleven figures were selected to star in the campaign for the Cyber drop, filmed by TORSO.

“We drew our inspiration for this campaign from À Table, the trippy perfume ad filmed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino for Gaultier back in 1995. Ours is a motley feast of fashion and food where good manners turn devilish, with time either moving into hyper-speed or slowing to a total halt.” — TORSO

Dressed in pieces from the Cyber drop, the eleven stars have appropriated Gaultier’s codes in this ambitious project brimming with the spirit of inclusivity (obviously) and genuine collaboration. The cast includes artist and performer ORLAN, singer Wejdene, and model Cybil Buck, the latter of whom had already strutted on the Gaultier catwalk in 1995. These faces, both familiar and unfamiliar, have all played the Gaultier game most admirably!
