MULBERRY SPRING/SUMMER 2017 LOOK 16
25/06/2017 - Margaux Warin

Johnny Coca is Spanish, has lived in Paris, loves math, is occasionally a guest speaker at Central Saint Martin's. He also happens to be the brains (and the hands) behind the revival of the quintessentially british brand Mulberry since 2015. With a passion for architecture and visuals arts, Johnny Coca combines his own unique aesthetic with the heritage brand's traditions; creating a strong statement for a new era.

What's the last thing you saw that inspired you?

The Vulgar exhibition at the Barbican

Please describe your Summer 17 collection in three words:

Uniform without uniformity

What's your earliest fashion memory?

Styling my sisters’ Barbie dolls. I used to knit their outfits.

The best thing about showing in London is:

The choice of venues. I’ve showed in the deeply gothic Guildhall and, by contrast, in a disused modern printing mill.

What was your favourite piece in your last collection and why?

I particularly like the striped pieces. Stripes are kind of old-fashion and institutional, yet they feel very modern and right for this time, and if you place them in an unexpected context, like on a fluid or frilled dress, the result is truly fresh.

The best show-tune ever to be played on the catwalk?

Agnes Obel’s track Aventine, which was played at Valentino’s AW14 show.

The film that most speaks to your aesthetic is:

Talons Aiguilles by Pedro Almodovar

Your favourite fictional character is ______ because ________

Patsy and Edina from Ab Fab, because I love their humour and craziness. It makes the industry less serious and more ironic.

If only one woman (alive or dead) could wear your collection for the rest of eternity, who would you want it to be?

Jean Shrimpton

Your top trend this season was:

Track soles. I ran them in my Winter 16 show with heels and bright ribbons.
